Ankle Ligament Reconstruction Surgery

What is ankle ligament reconstruction surgery?

Ankle ligament reconstruction surgery is typically considered when other conservative treatments such as physiotherapy have failed to provide relief for lateral ankle instability and sprains. The main goal of this surgery is to stabilize the ankle joint and prevent it from giving way.

What does ankle ligament reconstruction surgery involve?

Typically, the surgical procedure for repairing a torn ankle ligament will be performed as a day case under a general anaesthetic. Initially, your consultant may conduct an arthroscopic examination of the ligament to assess the damage. Following this, a larger incision will be made close to the affected ligament.

Depending on the extent of the damage, the existing ligament may be repaired using stitches. In more severe cases, additional support may be required from other tissues or a tendon may need to be used to replace the torn ligament. Your consultant will decide on the best course of action based on your individual circumstances.

Why might I need ankle ligament reconstruction surgery?

If you are experiencing an ankle sprain or instability, you may require ankle ligament reconstruction surgery.

Some of the common symptoms of an ankle sprain include pain, swelling, and bruising, but it may still be possible to bear some weight on your foot. Additionally, you may feel as if your ankle is “catching” or locking and have a lack of stability in your ankle, which can cause it to give way frequently. There is also a possibility of ankle dislocation or osteochondral injury, which is a defect in the cartilage at the tip of the bones.

How long does it take to recover?

After ankle ligament reconstruction surgery, you will be given crutches and instructed on their proper use before being discharged from the hospital. The recovery process involves wearing a cast or splint for a minimum of two weeks, during which rest is essential. Following this period, you will be provided with a support boot, but it is recommended that you continue to avoid putting weight on your foot for four to six weeks, depending on your unique case.

Patients can typically return to work five to six weeks after the procedure, even if their job requires manual labor or walking. Additionally, low-impact sports activities can be resumed at this time, but higher-impact exercise should be avoided for at least ten to twelve weeks post-surgery. If your consultant approves, you may also begin driving a manual car, but make sure to check with your car insurance company first.

What is the long-term impact of ankle ligament reconstruction surgery?

After a period of twelve weeks post-surgery, patients are usually able to walk normally and resume high impact sports activities. Additionally, they can wear heeled shoes, but it is important to note that wearing higher heels for extended periods may cause damage to the feet.
